Endings after Endings.

Wed Jul 2, 2008, 12:05 AM
THERE MIGHT BE SPOILERS IN THIS. MAINLY ABOUT MOVIES YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN ANYWAY, AND ONLY ABOUT SECRET ENDINGS. I MIGHT HAVE TO GET INTO PLOT DETAILS TO DISCUSS SOME OF THEM, THOUGH.

I can't remember the first movie I saw that had an easter egg ending. First movie where it really mattered that I remember was the og Pirates of the Carribean. For those of you who don't remember it, it involved Barbosa's pet monkey going back to the cave and stealing a piece of the cursed aztec treasure, making it a zombiemonkey. After the movie was over and i saw that, I thought, "Oh, thats cute." But the people who wrote the movie thought it would be a great idea to put that little plot detail in the second movie. The first time you see that little monkey is right after Jack daringly escapes an island in a coffin and is understandably pissed. So he goes and does what any pissed off pirate would do; he shoots the monkey who's running around the Black Pearl. The fun part happened when the monkey didn't die and all the people who hadn't seen the easter egg ending to the first movie and all the people who forgot about it were really confused. I was one of those people. I heard rumors on the 'net of the first easter egg ending and re-watched it and forced my whole family to do the same. I remembered seeing it the first time and made the line "Here *gunshot* an undead monkey. Top that." make sense.

The makers of Pirates werent happy enough with confusing half of their audience. They decided to make another easter egg ending for everyone at the end of Pirates 2. One of my friends famously said "Dude, did you stay after the credits? You didn't? You need to. It makes the whole rest of the movie make sense." So I did. I saw the movie again and waited till after the credits were over. I was rewarded with natives of the cannible island at the beginning worshiping the key holding dog like they did with Johnny Depp. Suffice to say, this didn't make the whole movie make sense and I was mad at my friend.

The next part of this story happens in 2007, when pirates 3 came out. Everyone knew about the easter egg endings in both Pirates 1 and 2, and by then, Xmen 3 had done it too with an ending that revealedd that Professor X wasn't dead. Sure enough (and i saw this at midnight) we waited till the end and there was a neat little ending about Will Turner (The new Davey Jones) returning to shore to see his wife and his son for his once every 10 year shore leave. I liked this ending. I thought it wasn't necessary, but it also quelled anyone who thought the ending they gave you sucked butt.

Where this rant is going, thought, points towards the present and future. Iron Man is in theaters now (I guess it must be almost out of theaters) and guess what? It has a secret ending, like many of its fellow super hero movies. This ending comes after the brilliant ending that comes before it, (I'm Iron Man.) and has Tony Stark coming home to find Samuel L Jackson dressed up as Nick Fury telling Tony about the Avengers Initiative. Im no comic books expert, but I'm pretty sure that sets this up for an Avengers movie. I'm also pretty sure that this ending was rather necessary. I mean, people told me about the endings existence with the phrase "have you seen it? You NEED to see it." Saw it, liked it, but ultimately...thought it should've been in the movie.

Recently I saw Wanted, a movie based on one of the very few comic books I've read. The movie was pretty ass kickingly awesome and had nothing to do with the comic book at all, but I got to the end and one of my friends said "I 100 percent guarentee there is a secret ending." We forced our way out of the theater, pulling him with us. I didn't care to see a secret ending at that point. This secret ending phenomenon has been going on for too long, and I didn't want to be forced to sit though the credits for a small ammount of extra footage that probably should've been in the movie anyway. One of the things that i hear quite often when watching youtube videos with people is "Wait...wait...it's not over..." once the credits roll. it's one of those things that really bugs me.

So with my thesis clearly stated right at the end of my rant, i will make my point in the conclusion: Easter Egg movie endings have gotten out of hand. Every movie has one now a days, and it's rare to see creativity in them. If you want me to watch your little easter egg, make me not regret sitting through 10 minutes of credits. If it is creative and adds to the plot without making it necessary to see it, by all means, give us something extra to chew on. But seriously, Not every movie needs one. This is a lesson Hollywood needs to learn very soon.
